Dubbed the Era of the Wreckers, Key West was flourishing as one of the richest cities in America during a time of maritime accomplishments. Learn the ins and outs of the wrecking industry and follow along with the rediscovery of vessel Isaac Allerton.
Isaac Allerton was a merchant ship that sank off the coast of the Florida Keys in 1856. Combining live actors, interactive exhibits, and actual artifacts, the museum showcases the story of Asa Tift and his wrecking crew. Follow along as the actors detail the unusual wrecking industry and how it created a lucrative livelihood for some of Key West’s most notable pioneers.
Asa will lead you from his fascinating warehouse all the way through the history of Isaac Allerton’s demise and beyond. Relive the wreck of the ship and learn how the crews would save the cargo. Explore artifacts in each exhibit that shed light on how these brave souls were living onboard.

Did you know

The Isaac Allerton was built in 1838 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. It was 137 feet long and weighed 594 tons.
The sinking and recovery of cargo from Isaac Allerton was the most lucrative wreck in history – the wreckers recovered over $50,000 worth of goods.
The wrecking industry became so popular because over 100 ships passed through Key West each day. Wreckers would sit in the observation tower and yell ‘Wreck Ashore!’ at the sight of trouble.
In 1921, the wrecking courts were closed due to advancements in navigation and local railroads.

History buffs, this one is for you! The Harry S. Truman Little White House serves as Florida’s only presidential site and holds a whole lot of history within its walls.
Originally constructed in 1890 as naval officer housing, the house became famous during Truman’s presidency when he used it as his winter White House. Here, he faced the rebuilding of Europe, the Palestine question, issues of Civil Rights, and the American response to the Cold War. It has since been transformed into a living diary of the president’s past, complete with artifacts and exhibits that paint a vivid picture of America’s history.
Tours run every 15-20 minutes led by knowledgeable guides who will lead you through the Truman Annex. Listen and look on as you get a personal insight into Truman’s decision-making process in the face of key US conflicts and a history of Key West’s naval power. Since the Harry S. Truman Little White House is a living museum, exhibits and artifacts are changing all the time.

Other presidents that used the Harry S. Truman Little White House include Dwight Eisenhower, William Howard Taft, Jimmy Carter, John Kennedy, and Bill Clinton.
It was the site of the International Peace Talks between the presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan in 2001.

Glades Exhibit – watch 'Our Everglades Story' and learn all about the history of the area and local conservation efforts. You'll also meet an array of farmyard animals. There are Peking ducks called Joey and Chandler, Himalayan rabbits called Queenie, Jimmy, and Timmy, and three huge pot-bellied pigs named Jack, Wilbur, and Lefty. You can also enjoy our variety of reptile presentations and learn about various native and exotic reptiles while seeing some up close with a stunning Everglades backdrop. Check out our rescued tortoises and for an extra fee, you can mine for gems and sharks teeth at the Sawgrass Mining Co. located in this exhibit area.

Presented by the MDPL, you’ll get an introduction to all of the architectural styles that are on display in the Miami Beach Architectural Historic District.
During the 90-minute walking tour, an experienced guide will take you inside and out of some of the most interesting buildings in the area. Will I get wet aboard the vessels? If you ride Thriller Miami Speedboats, there are times when wind, speed and direction will affect water and sea spray which may enter the boat. If you ride Thriller Hurricane, you will get wet depending on where you sit.
Do Thriller Miami Speedboats always go out to the Ocean and speed up to 40 mph? Most of the time, yes, but while every effort is made to ensure a safe Thriller ride upon our vessel during your trip, the captain will take the sea conditions into consideration before going into the Atlantic Ocean and/or reaching speeds up to 40 mph.
